Saturday Review of Books Challenge

Well. I just said, not even a week ago, that I wasn't going to join any other challenges until I finished one. I clearly remember myself saying that. But what's a goal for if not to be broken?

Semicolon is hosting a challenge for her Saturday Review of Books blog. The goal is to read 6 books that have been reviewed for the Saturday Review by the end of 2007. As you review each book you should go back and link it at the Review. Sounds easy enough? I went and reviewed the list to choose from, and wouldn't you know it, there are tons of books on there that are already on my TBR list! In fact, enough of them are on my other challenge lists that I'm really not adding many books at all to my challenges. How can I not sign up?

Here's my six:

  1. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood (Also on my Dystopian list)
  2. Never Let Me Go by Ishiguro (ditto)
  3. Wicked by Maguire (Also on my TBR Challenge list)
  4. A Wrinkle in Time by L'Engle (on my Newbery list)
  5. Sense and Sensibility by Austen (not on any list, but coming to my Inbox daily courtesy of http://www.dailylit.com/)
  6. A Thousand Splendid Suns by Hosseni (also not on any list, but a recent gift)

Alternates:

  1. Ella Minnow Pea by Dunn (TBR challenge alternative)
  2. Lean Mean Thirteen by Evanovich (I already have this one, I can't imagine I won't get it read before the end of the year. It's the one series I'm actually current on.)
  3. Shakespeare's Landlord by Harris (in the TBR)
  4. My Sister's Keeper by Picoult (Not on any list, but my best friend Gina recently sent it to me with glowing reviews)
  5. The Road by McCarthy (on my Book Awards Challenge list)
  6. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by See (in the TBR)

Book Awards Reading Challenge

Ok, just ONE more challenge. Then I'm done. Actually, this one is so easy it doesn't even hardly count. The Books Awards Reading Challenge is hosted by 3M and the goal is to read 12 award winning books between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008. Books CAN overlap with other challenges, which means my list is mostly made already! Just a handful more and a full year to add them, I think this should work out just fine. As a bonus, I don't have to have my full list now, so I can add things from other, TBD, challenges later.

Here's what I've got so far:
  1. Number the Stars by Lois Lowry (Newbery 1990)
  2. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D Taylor (Newbery 1977)
  3. Up A Road Slowly by Irene Hunt (Newbery 1967)
  4. A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine D'Engle (Newbery 1963)
  5. The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Spear (Newbery 1960)
  6. The Optimist's Daughter by Eudora Welty (Pulitzer 1973)
  7. Bel Canto by Ann Patchett (Orange Prize 2002)(PEN/Faulker 2002)
  8. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood (Governor General's Award 1985)
  9. Possession: A Romance by A. S. Byatt (Man Booker 1990) (not on any other challenge, but on my shelves)
  10. Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides (Pulitzer 2003) (ditto)
  11. The Road - Cormac McCarthy (Pulitzer 2007) (not on another challenge, but feels like something I should read.)
  12. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by JK Rowling (British Book Award 2006)
Ok, there's my first 12. I've only added 3 that aren't already on another challenge. Now here's the best part- there are PRIZES- credits from paperbackswap! Woohoo! The more books you read, the more chances you have to win. I'm in it to win it!

3M has set up a nice little blog for this challenge, so come by and sign up- Books Awards Reading Challenge.

By the Decades Challenge

It has been pointed out to me that I can join this challenge without adding any more books to my list! So how could I not?

Here's my list:
  • 2000s-Never Let Me Go by Ishiguro
  • 1990s-The Giver by Lois Lowry
  • 1970s- The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin
  • 1980s- The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
  • 1960s- Up a Road Slowly by Irene Hunt
  • 1950s- The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare
  • 1940s- The Little Prince by Antoine St. Exupery
  • 1930s- Brave New World by Huxley
  • 1920s- Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery
I have already read The Little Prince half a dozen times. This is my very favorite book, and when I saw it was written in the 40s I couldn't resist adding it. Perhaps it does not qualify for the challenge as I have read it, in which Animal Farm is also from the 40s. There are actually lots of great novels from the 40s that I could have added- Gigi (which I have), Cheaper By the Dozen, The Heart of the Matter, The Pearl, Cannery Row, Stuart Little. I'm going with The Little Prince because it's my favorite.

Reading the lists on wikipedia sure does make me want to read a lot of classics that I never got around to. There are just so many good books out there, and not enough time in my life to read them all.

Newbery Challenge

I've decided to join the Newbery Challenge. This challenge runs May 15- December 31, 2007.

I'm not sure where I'll find the time to read them, but I can't help myself. I figure just entering the challenge will have me reading at least a couple books I'd otherwise skip over. I had a really hard time choosing as so many of them brought back memories for me. I managed to only pick one that I had read before (#6). Here's my list:

1. The Giver by Lois Lowry (1994 Newbery Winner and on my Dystopian Challenge list.)
2. Number the Stars by Lois Lowry (1990 Newbery Winner)
3. The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin (1979)
4. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor
5. Up a Road Slowly by Irene Hunt (1967)
6. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle (1963)
7. (alternate title) The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare (1959)

Dystopian Challenge

For a list of participants, see this post on my main blog.

In case you missed the first post, the rules were as follows:

  1. Pick any number of books you wish to read that fall into the Utopia/Dystopia genre.
  2. They do not have to be books you've never read, but hopefully they aren't books you last week.
  3. Challenge is open now, and will last until November 6th.

I followed that up with post #2, which has some lists of books and links to lists.

A couple of brave souls actually agreed to play along with me! Ok, so there aren't many, but at least I'm not alone. I plan to convince my husband to join in too. I had a hard time narrowing down my list, without it being the first 5 books listed. I think I have it now though.<

  1. The Giver by Lois Lowry. (I really want to read Lowry's Number the Stars too, but it doesn't fit the challenge. Or really, any of her books. )
  2. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. (I read this in 10th grade and loved it so much. It was the first books that really made me *think*. Then I had to do a presentation to my class, much of which revolved around sex and drugs, and I was mortified.)
  3. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. (I've also read this before, but I'd like to read it again as an adult and mother.)
  4. Where Late The Sweet Birds Sang by Kate Wilhelm. (Susan at West of Mars keeps recommending it, so I chose it.)
  5. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. (This one was on the list at wikipedia and looks interesting.)
  6. Either Animal Farm or 1984 by Orwell. I have not decided which yet.

TBR Challenge

I signed up to participate in the TBR (to be read) challenge. Like a lot of bookish people, I have a lot of books that I've never gotten around to reading. Some of these books have been following me around for, uh, years. Some of them I got last summer, or last week, but there's always something more pressing when I go to select a new book. Yesterday I found a link to the challenge here.

The rules of the challenge:
1. Pick 12 books that have been on the TBR pile (or in my case, piles) for more than 6 months.
2. Read one book a month in 2007, until the list is gone.
3. It is permissable to have an "extra credit" list of alternates, in case the original twelve aren't doing it for you.

Here's my list, in no particular order, (crossed off books have been read):

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Rachel's Holiday by Marian Keyes
Wicked by Gregory Maguire
Bel Canto by Ann Patchett
Behind the Scenes at the Museum by Kate Atkinson
The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke
Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery
A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf
The Eight by Katherine Neville
Carpe Demon by Julie Kenner
The Second Coming of Lucy Hatch by Marsha Moyer
Try by Lily Burana

My "Extra Credit"
Toddler Edited by Jennifer Margulis
The Imperfect Mom Edited by Therese J. Borchard
Katherine by Anya Seton
The Makeup Girl by Andrea Semple
The Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella
The Dogs of Bedlam Farm by Jon Katz
The Shadow of the Wind by Carols Ruiz Zafon
Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn
